|
|
The South Pole; an account of the Norwegian Antarctic expedition in the "Fram," 1910-12, by Roald Amundsen. Translated by A. G. Chater. 11/04
This book was cataloged on October 31, 2008. The audio files have been transferred to Internet Archives and may be accessed at: http://www.archive.org/details/south_pole_0810_librivox
In contrast to Scott's South Pole expedition, Amundsen's expedition benefited from good equipment, appropriate clothing, and a fundamentally different primary task (Amundsen did no surveying on his route south and is known to have taken only two photographs) Amundsen had a better understanding of dogs and their handling, and he used of skis more effectively. He pioneered an entirely new route to the Pole and they returned. In Amundsen's own words: "Victory awaits him who has everything in order -- luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck." Short accounts by other members of the party are appended. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia by Karen Merline.)

- How to claim a part:
To find a section to record, look at the sections in the box below. All those without names beside them are available. Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6 to 8 below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
- New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
- Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: November 30, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. I will note the date you volunteer for a chapter, and if you haven't posted about the progress of your chapter(s) or recorded in within 2 months from the date you sign up, I will put it back to the pool. This doesn't mean you have to record within 2 months, just be sure to keep in touch to let me know how things are going.Very Happy If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
- Where do I find the text?
Source texts: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/4229
Please read only from the individual .txt files link in the box below.
- Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
There is a repeating scanno in this text whereby the ship's name "Fram" comes through as "Franz"! Please watch for this, and read "Fram".
(BC admin)
- BEFORE recording:
Please check the Recording Notes:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
Set your recording software to:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
- DURING recording:
Please read the intros and outros from the individual .txt files for each section.
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
- AFTER recording:
Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
southpole_00_amundsen.mp3, southpole_01_amundsen.mp3 (all letters lower case)
ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
Title: 00 - Dedication; The First Account; Introduction
Title: 01 - Vol I Ch 1: The History of the South Pole, pt 1
Artist: Roald Amundsen
Album: The South Pole
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
- Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
http://upload.librivox.org
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: km - kmerline
- If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
- your name/pseudonym as you want to appear in the LibriVox catalog, and your website URL if you like. These are only necessary if this is your first LibriVox recording.
- the file size of your .mp3 file/duration of the recording.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. _________________ Readers needed for Charles Kingsley's "Hypatia"

Hi Llama, welcome to LibriVox.
As you can see, this post is a "work in progress" - I was called away from the computer last night by "real life", so the text links have yet to be posted!
Nevertheless, your interest is very welcome! Section 1 has been assigned to you. Unless you have previous recording experience, you might like to submit a 3 or 4 minute sample of the beginning of your section to make sure the technical issues are all ironed out.
Just post it to this thread, and I'll have a listen. When you reply, please tell me the name you wish to use for catalog credit and your URL, if any. _________________ Readers needed for Charles Kingsley's "Hypatia" |

Karen,
I was going to ask for section 01, but in reading the thread it looks like it might be spoken for? If not, please sign me up. Otherwise I guess I'll opt for 02 instead.
Thanks
Jo
