Complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
http://librivox.org/the-devils-dictionary-by-ambrose-bierce/

The Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce.

Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/972

A collection of cynical and humorous definitions. As a taster, my favourites under the letter "A" are:-

Quote:

ACCORD, n. Harmony.

ACCORDION, n. An instrument in harmony with the sentiments of an assassin.

This book contains a number of entries which nowadays would be found strongly offensive; however, I don't think it's our job to censor the works that we read, so please leave the original text as it is, in this respect.

I think the frequent poems are all written by Bierce himself, so don't worry too much about the pronunciation of the pseudonyms, as long as you're consistent.

General Comments on reading

1 Each entry has an abbreviation for the part of speech. Please give these in full:

n. - noun
adj. - adjective
v.t. - transitive verb
v.i. - intransitive verb
adv. - adverb
pp. - preposition
pro. / pron. - pronoun
v. - verb
n.pl. - plural noun
p.p. - past participle
x. (for the entry on Hash! Smile) - (don't try to name a part of speech here)

2 Correct any obvious typos, e.g.

Quote:

ABASEMENT, n. A decent and customary mental attitude in the presence of wealth of power. Peculiarly appropriate in an employee when addressing an employer.

[Here, "wealth of power" in the Gutenberg text should obviously be "wealth or power"]

3 In general, ignore minor disturbances to the flow, such as "[sic]".

4 Read quotations with a slightly different voice, to separate them from the main text.

The following is just a suggestion. However you handle these situations, please try to be consistent.

4A Precede the authors of the snatches of poetry with "By .."

Quote:

Consigned by way of admonition,
His soul forever to perdition.

[By ..] Judibras

4B Precede the authors of non-poetry quotes with "Attributed to .."

Quote:

When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for
people to abridge their king, a decent respect for the opinions of
mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel
them to the separation.

[Attributed to ...] Oliver Cromwell

4C Precede the names of quoted works by "From .."

Quote:

God made the world in six days and was arrested on the seventh.

[From ...] The Unauthorized Version

*************************************************************

Recording:

I've broken the work up into blocks of between 18 and 36 minutes, estimated from my rather slow test reading of the entries for the letter A. My estimate is given as Est, with actual time next to it.

Please make sure that the sample rate of your recording is 44100; we have been having problems with recordings with different sample rates. In Audacity this can be determined from the menu (Edit/Preferences/Quality tab/Default Sample Rate) or when you have a file open, click on the header of the control panel at the left of the sonogram ... then go to Rate at the bottom of the pull-down.

Start each section with:

"This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Librivox dot org. Recording by [your name]. The Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce." [If your section has more than one letter, mention it here e.g. "Letters J to L" ]

Then start each letter section with "The letter .... " A, B or whatever.

***

End with "End of letter [whatever] in the Devil's Dictionary" ... optionally followed by "Recorded by ...."

geetu,

"E" is yours.

Thanks for reminding me about a completion date. I think we should be able to finish this by the end of March.

What a cool project! I'll be the MC, Peter. Can you store the files until this is done? If not, after you've received them and checked them, you can send them on to me via yousendit.

I'll be back to grab a section eventually!

I'd like to have a go at the letter C. I haven't read the dictionary before, but I've just had a quick look at the letter C, and it seems like it could be fun to read.

The Letter B is now wending its slow way upstream to the server. It should be there in about another half hour or so.

It was a lot of fun! I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone - go on, give it a shot!

Peter - resolutions crumble. I meant to finish one recording before taking on another, but how can I resist this? N, O for me, please.
