|
|
This book is now complete and can be downloaded from the LibriVox catalogue: http://librivox.org/the-second-latchkey-by-cm-and-am-williamson/
The Second Latchkey by Charles Norris and Alice Muriel Williamson
WARNING! This thread contains speculations and spoilers posted by readers. If you haven't listened to all chapters that have come in and would like to claim, you may want to PM me rather than risk having the plot given away.
NOTE: This project has special rules for signing up and deadlines!
I like collaborative project, and usually it doesn't bother me much to read a chapter from the end of a book, even if I don't know the book. However, with mysteries it's different. If one doesn't know the plot, it's much more exciting to read - or listen to - them in sequence.
So here's how this project will run:
Readers sign up for one (or more) chapter. Process as usual, post in the thread and claim. Each chapter is due by a particular date. It is the reader's responsibility to submit the recording ready for that date. Every other day, we will publish that day's chapter (follow the 'Listen' links in the reader list below). So as a reader who doesn't know the book, you can claim chapter 15 and not even look at it until the date it's due. On the previous 14 days, you can listen to the chapters as they come in. On day 15, you record and submit your chapter, it's published, and then you can listen to further chapters as the book unfolds. The old serial novel idea, but as an audio book.
Of course, this can only work if readers can commit to a particular date. If your date is approaching and you have something else on suddenly (it will happen to some people), please post here as soon as you know, so we can find a stand-in.
Of course you can also record (and send) your chapter before your sign-up date!
- How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
- New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
- Is there a deadline?
See note above - recordings are due on the date noted in the list for each chapter. Target completion date of this project: 1 November 2007.
- Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/18470
I have indicated the word count of each section in the Notes field; forum discussions have shown that people read on average 130-190 words per minute - so the longest chapter is about 35 mins long.
- Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
(Admin link)
- BEFORE recording:
Please check the Recording Notes:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
Set your recording software to:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
- DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
Start of recording (Intro)- "Chapter [number] of The Second Latchkey. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
- If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name]"
- Say:
"The Second Latchkey by Charles Norris and Alice Muriel Williamson. Chapter [number]"
End of recording- At the end of the section, say:
“End of Chapter [number]"
- If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
- At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Second Latchkey by Charles Norris and Alice Muriel Williamson."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
- AFTER recording:
Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this thread for more information.
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
secondlatchkey_##_williamson.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. secondlatchkey_01_williamson.mp3)
ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
Title: ## - [Chapter title] (e.g. "01 - A White Rose")
Artist: Charles Norris and Alice Muriel Williamson
Album: The Second Latchkey
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Please also post the duration of your chapter! - If you have your own server space, post the link here. Please leave the file in this location until the project is catalogued. Even better, upload the file to the LibriVox Uploader, see below.
- If you don't have your own server space, please upload with the LibriVox Uploader:
http://upload.librivox.org/
username: librivox
password: librivox123
If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
- your name/pseudonym as you want to appear in the LibriVox catalog, and your website URL if you like. These are only necessary if this is your first LibriVox recording.
- the file size of your .mp3 file/duration of the recording.
Any questions?

Yay! What kept you?
BTW, everyone: Sibella has just started another solo project, another mystery by the Williamsons. EDIT: Sorry, apparently didn't read Sibella's last post completely. _________________ "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the world." I just have to tell you all that this is so much fun! When I first found LibriVox and started just downloading to listen while I walked my dog, I actually sought out solo books---but now that I have joined you--with much encouragement, I enjoy all the voices SO MUCH! When I hear a name, I can conjure up the voice, and when I hear a name, I know the voice. It just enriches the experience, and, well, I'm just an enthusiastic newbie, but Thanks for this great experience!!!
Woops! I didn't say that right. It was something like: when I hear a voice, I know the name...Duh. Anyway, it's pretty darned neat. _________________ Katie

Hooray, Katie! That's how I feel. It's soooo much fun.
Where are you from in Arkansas? I'm from Cave City. I bet you don't know where that is... _________________ Love history? Please come help with Pioneers of France in the New World!! |

Ohhh, I don't know where Cave City is...I'm a transplant from So. California, because I have a sister here...I'm in Hot Springs Village (which is kind of a retirement community, north-east of Hot Springs--central Arkansas--but I'm one of the younger ones, a baby compared to the 80-plus year olds). But this is really a beautiful place, lots of green, hills, water. I know I'm among kindred spirits here in LibriVox, and it is so GOOD!
Thanks, Sibella, for your note! I know I am in that place where I'm all enthusiasm. It's a good place to be!!!
Sweet dreams to you all, _________________ Katie |

Ooom Hot Springs is so nice. I bet HSV is nice, too! I went to college in Conway, and used to run down for the Arkansas Derby with my grandmama every year. _________________ Love history? Please come help with Pioneers of France in the New World!! |

Yes! Another mystery
May I have chapter 7? _________________ She had heard it said that humans are supposed only to use about a tenth of their brains, and that no one was very clear what the other nine-tenths were for, but she had certainly never heard it suggested that they were used for storing penguins. |

Of course!
And soon we'll have all the 'usual suspects' together again. As it were. _________________ "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the world." Albert Einstein |
