|
|
This project is complete. All associated files can be found on the catalog page: http://librivox.org/exercises-in-knitting-by-cornelia-mee/
Exercises in Knitting by Cornelia Mee
This project has special rules for signing up and a special knitting portion!
Since there is an avid group of knitters here at LibriVox, we are starting this special project. This knitting book does not have any illustrations and we thought it would be fun to try our hand at knitting some samples to illustrate this book. In addition to supplying an image of the knitted sample, we would like the knitter to also write up a modern version of the pattern if possible. We will post the finished images and patterns on the KnitWiki and anywhere else that seems appropriate... therefore YOUR PATTERN & IMAGES MUST BE PLACED IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN (as well as your recording). If you're not willing to do so, then this might not be the project for you.
Notes/Tips on Converting the Patterns:- "Seam" = Purl - see, and add, more on this LibriVox wiki page. (Also includes Pin and Yarn size info).
- No camera? How about a scanner? Either way of obtaining your image is OK with us =)
- For any of the coverlet or shawl patterns, you may simply create a swatch showing the pattern stitch.
- For patterns with "14 shades" of a color, feel free to use your imagination or even go with a solid color... no one expects you to find that many shades of anything... though the suggestion has been made to try using embroidery floss =)
- You are welcome to work out the pattern and find someone else to do the recording.. please let us know of all persons involved in your section.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording. Claiming a section to record also signs you up for working the knitted pattern, submitting an image, and a re-written pattern--be sure you can commit to all parts of your section.
- New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
- Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: Final deadline Jan. 31, 2009 (original deadline: Oct. 1, 2008) – but try to send your recordings, patterns, and images of your knitted section as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let us know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
- Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/21032
- Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
(Admin link)
- BEFORE recording:
Please check the Recording Notes:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
Set your recording software to:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
- DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
Start of recording (Intro)- "Pattern [number and name] from Exercises in Knitting. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
- If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name]"
- Say:
"Exercises in Knitting by Cornelia Mee. Pattern [number and name]"
End of recording- At the end of the section, say:
“End of Pattern [number]"
- If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
- At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Exercises in Knitting by Cornelia Mee."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
- AFTER recording:
Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
exercisesinknitting_##_mee.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. exercisesinknitting_01_mee.mp3)
ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
Title: ## - [Section title]
Artist: Cornelia Mee
Album: Exercises in Knitting
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. - If you have your own server space, post the link here. Please leave the file in this location until the project is catalogued. Even better, upload the file to the LibriVox Uploader, see below.
- If you don't have your own server space, please upload with the LibriVox Uploader (please be sure to post the link you receive after your upload, in this thread):
http://upload.librivox.org
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: tc - thistlechick
If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording (better yet, when you sign up if you're new):
- your name/pseudonym as you want to appear in the LibriVox catalog, and your website URL if you like. These are only necessary if this is your first LibriVox recording.
- the file size of your .mp3 file/duration of the recording.
Any questions?

Betsie, you're a marvel and a wonder. Super project idea. We could do this with all sorts of other books describing practical things, couldn't we?
After choosing three patterns and finding each time they had been claimed before, I went ahead and updated the magic window, seeing that Betsie is probably asleep at this hour... will try and find a pattern again now.
EDIT: OK, I'll take 23, Pretty Open Pattern. I'll start with something simple - haven't knitted anything for about a year and a half. _________________ "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the world." Albert Einstein |

I'm looking into the netting thing. It's been on my list of things to figure out for a while. No promises though. And if anyone actually knows how to do it and wants it, go for it. _________________ Whereas story is processed in the mind in a straightforward manner, poetry bypasses rational thought and goes straight to the limbic system and lights it up like a brushfire. Could I try section 22?
But I have questions already!
Any idea what No. 10 pins. are? and four-thread fleecy is..? :S Although I'm wondering if I should just try it in double knit wool. _________________ My LV Projects | Like Arthurian legend? Why not try Le Mort d'Arthur Vol 2? |

Could that be equivalent to UK needle size before they started labeling in mm. If so it would be 3.25 mm needles.
I have a book here that converts fleecy wool to worsted or mohair. No mention of 4 strand though. _________________ Whereas story is processed in the mind in a straightforward manner, poetry bypasses rational thought and goes straight to the limbic system and lights it up like a brushfire. I've started knitting. So far, not much impressed with the outcome, but most likely it's down to my lack of knitting prowess, and not to the pattern. I'll plod on. _________________ "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the world." Albert Einstein |

I would be happy to undertake the knitting and pattern translating for 24 and 54, if someone else wants to do the recording. If not, that's fine, too. _________________ Debbie |

Gesine, Thanks for updating the window (All MC's are welcome to update the window, including pattern notes, with this project) ... Kri also gets credit for helping get the ball rolling with this project. =)
